A catering bill cooking in Ottawa | Letters
THE EDITOR, Madam:
News from the Governor General’s (GG) residence in Ottawa sounded familiar. A spending scandal that seems to go without saying in this post of representative of the Queen in Canada, although the GG is appointed by the Prime Minister. This time it’s Mary Simon who was appointed vice-regal last year when GG Julie Payette was forced to resign following various complaints of workplace bullying and harassment. Recent reports indicate that GG Simon racked up a catering bill of over $93,000 during a recent eight-day official visit to England, the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait, with an entourage of 29 staff from the government. Perhaps the last of the big spenders was GG Adrienne Clarkson, who embarked on a much-derided circumpolar trip to Russia, Iceland and Finland in 2003, with an entourage of 59 members of the social and cultural elite. from Canada. This state visit cost Canadian taxpayers a whopping $5.3 million, and when this latest scandal was reported, I enlisted the help of Mr. Google to brush up on a few details.
It is now highly relevant that GG Mary Simon watched and likely learned lessons from GG Adrienne Clarkson. For some unknown reason, a Beatles song is playing in my cranial jukebox as I research this sordid tale from the GG’s residence at Rideau Hall. I hear Paul McCartney sing: “Mother Mary comes to me, There will be an answer, Let it be, Let it be.”
