Laval police are investigating the attempted murder of a man suspected of being linked to the Montreal mafia who was shot dead in broad daylight.

Laval police spokesperson Geneviève Major said the victim, a man in his 40s, was shot in the abdomen around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday on Boulevard Lévesque. E., several blocks east of Hwy 25.

The major said the man was taken to hospital but was awaiting information on the victim’s state of health.

A police source confirmed to the Montreal Gazette that the victim is Davide (Baldy) Barberio, 42, a man who was charged, in 2016, as part of Project Clemenza, an investigation by the Combined Special Forces Unit. which targeted drug trafficking between different groups within the Montreal Mafia.

According to information made public as part of the Clemenza project, Barberio was working under the orders of Giuseppe De Vito, the influential Montreal mafia boss who was poisoned with cyanide on July 8, 2013, while serving a sentence in a federal penitentiary.

Evidence gathered in another investigation, Project Magot, identified Barberio as someone Montreal Mafia boss Stefano Sollecito would have often met between 2013 and 2015.
