“I was blown away by this place here, Do Good Donuts,” Singh said on his Instagram story, shouting the donut maker who regularly sets up shop at Leslieville Farmers Market.

The project was founded by Melanie Cote, whose daughter Alma was diagnosed with Williams syndrome, a genetic syndrome, at the age of five months.

In Alma’s six years of life, Côté saw only one young person with a visual intellectual disability working in his Toronto neighborhood.

Alma dreams of becoming a doctor or working at Starbucks. Côté was inspired by her daughter to start a non-profit social enterprise hiring young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities for on-the-job training at a donut shop.

Do Good Donuts launched at the Leslieville Farmer’s Market on May 16, sold out on day one.

“Jagmeet was walking around the market one day and stopping by to say hello,” Cote told blogTO.

“He was so fascinated with our mission and our amazing donuts that he immediately posted on his Instagram Stories and later yelled at us for ‘Small Business Saturday’.”

They sprinkle, chocolate dip, and cinnamon donuts, as well as specials like chocolate mint ($ 4 for a single donut, $ 22 for a half-dozen).

There are also cookies ($ 2.50) in the triple chocolate, chocolate chip, sugar, oatmeal, and ginger varieties. They also do merch, and there are even dog donuts.

“We currently have three young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities on our staff. They work both in our bakery kitchens and in our farmer’s market tent, ”says Cote.

“All three of them became more confident in serving customers, using our ordering system to enter orders and make changes, which all three said in their interviews that they were nervous they couldn’t do it. “

Do Good Donuts is piloting the market and is currently hosting a fundraiser that is close to hitting its goal of $ 12,500. The pilot phase will end on October 31.

“Hopefully we’ll be able to raise the funds we need to open a physical store so people can enjoy our baked goods and interns can work with us 12 months a year,” Cote said. .
